Our story began in 1999, when our family made the big move from South Africa to Australia in search of new opportunities and a fresh start. Like many immigrants, we brought with us not just our belongings, but our culture, our traditions, and most importantly, our love for South African food.

In 2001, we opened The South African Shop in Templestowe with a simple goal: to bring the tastes of home to our new community. What started as a small family business quickly became a hub for fellow South Africans looking for a slice of home and for Aussies curious to experience the flavours of our heritage. In 2005, we expanded to Caulfield to meet growing demand and connect with even more people.

Our shop is truly a family affair. Our three children grew up in the business, stacking shelves, serving customers, and learning the values of hard work, hospitality, and community. Over the years, they've become an integral part of what we do and how we do it.

We proudly import a wide range of authentic South African grocery products, from pantry staples to nostalgic treats. But what really sets us apart is our biltong made in house using a traditional family recipe developed by one of our founders, Bino. It’s crafted with care, using quality ingredients and time, honoured techniques passed down through generations.

More than just a shop, we’re a gathering place for those who share our roots or simply want to explore South African culture through food. We’re proud to be a small, family run business that brings people together, one bite at a time.
